The Need of Dental Crowns
A dental crown may be needed in any of the following situations:
- To protect a weak tooth from breaking
- To hold together parts of a cracked tooth
- To restore a broken tooth or a highly damaged tooth
- To hold a dental bridge
- To cover a dental implant
- Protect tooth from further decay
Types of Dental Crowns
Following are some of the most common types of dental crowns:
Stainless Steel Crowns
Stainless steel crowns are used on permanent teeth as a temporary measure. These removable crowns are typically used to prevent the tooth from further decay increase its life.
These are one of the most durable dental crowns made with either gold or various other metals. These are typically more expensive as compared to stainless steel crowns but if cared for properly will last longer.
Resin Dental Crowns
These are most affordable dental crowns. However, they are not as long lasting as other dental crowns and with time, they can break down and may require replacement.
If you have one or more missing teeth, a dental bridge uses a false tooth with a crown on either side to replace the lost tooth and fill in the gap left behind. Replacing missing teeth is important not just for aesthetic reasons. Filling in the space left by a lost tooth helps restore your ability to chew and speak while also preventing surrounding teeth from moving into the gap. During a procedure to place a bridge, two crowns are positioned on either side of the gap to support the new false tooth that will be filling in the area. We complete bridges usually within two office visits.
Dental bridges are used to bridge the gap between the teeth created by one or more missing teeth.
Some of the benefits of dental bridges are:
- Restore your smile and make it beautiful
- Restores your ability to chew properly
- Maintain the shape of your face
- Prevent further teeth from falling down or changing their original position
There are 3 types of Dental Bridges:
- Traditional Bridges:
These involve creating a crown for the tooth or implant on the side of the missing tooth.
- Cantilever Bridges:
These are used only when there are adjacent on only one side of the missing tooth.
- Maryland Boned Bridges:
These are bonded to the existing teeth and are used on just one side of the bridge.
